As mentioned above in the "Site Seeing & Tours" section, there are a number of businesses in Santa Cruz offering sailing charters, lessons, or boat rentals for those wishing to enjoy the open water of the Monterey Bay.

Surfing
|
With a surfing history stretching back over a hundred years Santa Cruz has long been a proving ground for California surfers. Full wet suits are necessary year-round due to Pacific water temperatures ranging from 40-55 degrees. Also, rushing currents, jagged rocks, and big, pounding waves demand respect from even the most accomplished surfers. For the novice there is a "family" surfing spot only a few hundred feet past the famous Steamer Lane located below Westcliff Drive, along the Lighthouse Field State Beach, the northern boundary of Monterey Bay (also known as Point Santa Cruz).

Fishing
|
Fishing is available both in the mountains at the Loch Lomond Recreational Area mountain lake/reservoir and out on the Monterey Bay. The California Department of Fish and Game stocks the Loch Lomond reservoir with rainbow trout approximately every three weeks from March to July. Largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish also maintain populations in the reservoir. All California State Fish and Game regulations apply. (Gas powered boats and swimming are not allowed.) The Monterey Bay and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary offer some of the most beautiful and pristine diving areas in the country, featuring magnificent views of prolific ocean life within the kelp forests and submerged pinnacles.

De Laveaga Golf Course
This narrow 18-hole championship golf course features many barrancas which must be carried. It sits up on a hill, offering some gorgeous views of the ocean. The condition of the course is great, considering it is one of the busiest in the area. It has hosted the California State Open Tournament three times.

There are a number of bicycling events and activities in the Santa Cruz area and some parks do have bicycling trails.

Horseback Riding
|
Many of the parks in the Santa Cruz area offer miles of scenic horseback riding trials in and around different terrains and settings. There are also many boarding stables in the area. Unfortunately, however, at the time that this listing was being created there were no businesses offering guided riding adventures in the area.
